There’s no doubt that Hollywood and the movie biz is in a state of risk aversion and the dreaded “contraction.” Ask anyone in the industry and you’ll be met with shudders and forced optimism, and it really is a time of hardship for those who love and create film. But in the wake of such uncertainty, we here at Whiskey & Horror have embraced a brand that pays homage to film in a way that is both nostalgic and modern, and we continue to be blown away by both the style and elevated flavor of Filmland Spirits.
A whiskey company whose aesthetic captures the excitement of B-movies and creature features, Filmland Spirits is back with Quadraforce, a blend of four straight bourbon whiskies distilled in four different states, that comes in four separate labels, each with its own impressive superhero. The site features a short script page, storyboards, and a movie trailer that details a narrative reminiscent of old Dick Tracy comics.
“Quadraforce is an idea we’ve had since the first days of Filmland,” Troy Bolotnick, Founder and CEO of Filmland Spirits, said in a news release. “We knew the story was going to be about four heroes uniting against evil, and we wanted to pair that story with a blend of four unique bourbons.”
In addition to the bonus features, Filmland Spirits consistently offers high quality craftsmanship and reliably delicious whiskey, as witnessed in past Whiskey & Horror pairings. Filmland Quadraforce is aged in American White Oak barrels for at least 4 years, each of the four featured mashes are distilled in Kentucky, California, Tennessee, and one mystery location, and the whiskey is produced in Kentucky. Quadraforce can be found in select retail locations and online for $59.99 or you can spring for the Quad-Pack that includes each special superhero label edition for $239.96.
Filmland Quadraforce comes in at 47% ABV/94 Proof and has a Mashbill of:
78% Corn & 12% Rye and 10% Malted Barley
70% Corn & 25% Wheat and 5% Malted Barley
80% Corn & 10% Rye and 10% Malted Barley
+ A Mystery Mash!
Aesthetic:
My special bottle is the Louisville Edition that stars ‘Kentucky Anna.’ The whiskey is a springtime hay yellow, slightly lighter than what you’d expect from a bourbon.
Nose:
Honeyed grits, sliced almonds, the whiskey has a breakfast aroma, sweet and savory well-combined.
Palate:
She’s a sweet bourbon and my personal favorite yet from Filmland Spirits, with notes of citrus and sucanat alongside currant and wheat. Very distinct spice adds a needed complexity to the profile, while the whiskey takes its time across the palate ending in a long, pleasantly bitter finish that balances the pastry-like sweetness.
